Sugar, Sugar!

My last post about Sugar Addiction (see below) caused quite about of controversy.I even heard from a representative at one of the major soda companies!I guess they didn't like my suggestion to eliminate
soda and other sugary drinks from your diet!

This week, New York City's Mayor Bloomberg proposed a ban on sodas and other "sugary drinks".  According to the NY Times, "the proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle - would be prohibited". (

Here's the best part ... "The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages".  I love it!     It can be argued that all of these beverages are detrimental to one's health.  Diet sodas contain artificial sweeteners which have questionable (at best) health effects.  Fruit juices are usually very high in sugar content as are milkshakes.  Yes, milkshakes and alcohol are okay; soda is not!   I don't know about you, but I'd rather be exiting a sports stadium driving next to someone high on sugar from soda than someone with a beer buzz!
While I am all for Americans watching what they eat and drink and practicing moderation, this sounds like a ridiculous proposal. I am reminded of the Prohibition on alcohol which was not very effective. If we ban soda from movie theaters and restaurants, it seems we would also have to ban ice cream, fried foods, desserts, creamy sauces, et cetera, et cetera. Americans may be fat, but we are still Americans! Free to choose. Education is a better remedy to the obesity epidemic.

Perhaps, the best thing about this wild proposal is the media attention it is receiving.  I hope that it will draw attention to the "empty" calories provided by soda and "sugary drinks".
